COBIT Focus framework analysis
Cobit Focus has an interesting article by Delton Sylvester, The Haze of Frameworks and Standards: Where does COBIT Fit?
One comment is that (like many others) he makes the mistake of pigenholing ITIL as an operations framework. As I cover in detail in my book and elsewhere on this blog, ITIL is much more ambitious than that. Across all the volumes, it pretty much covers all of the IT value chain (as does COBIT); ITIL's problems are:
- it is not a "mutually exclusive and comprehensive" (ME & C) framework - instead, it is "overlapping tectonic plates" to paraphrase ITIL's own words (an analysis cop-out in my view).
- its disregard for enterprise architecture and poor coverage of IT portfolio management,
- its occasionally idiosyncratic terminology, and
- its over-generalization of Change and Configuration Management.
