Consider this article in InformationWeek. Quote: "A lack of tools that automate the discovery and management of software components has hindered the whole concept..." Another quote: "IT managers need to know...what will happen when application configurations change." Is it an article on CMDBs? Nope, it's an article on SOA (service oriented architecture) management.
Should I consider Web services to be Configuration Items? Do their dependencies belong in the CMDB? Certainly, if I change web service A that is used by consumers B, C, and D, that would seem to be a typical enterprise change management problem. What if I change server or database X that supports web service A?
And, how do I hook up a UDDI-based SOA registry to a DMTF CIM-based CMDB? Just wondering. Little thing you all can work out for me in your spare time :-)
