"Knowing that a product claims to have a “CMDB” is about as useful as knowing it’s based on a “relational database” or a “client-server architecture.”"

You're absolutely correct...but really though...isn't part of the problem the loosely-defined standard as to what a CMDB actually is. For example:

From the ITIL pages - "27. Can documentation be included as a Configuration Item in the Configuration Management Database, ITIL only mentions Software and Hardware items?

Any item that the IT service management considers to be important enough to be 'managed' can be included in the CMDB. Documentation is NOT excluded in ITIL as an 'out of scope' item. Indeed, several large organisations have decided that Documentation IS important to them and have included it.

The inclusion of a reference to 'Documentation Configuration Item (DCI)' in ITIL will be considered at the next 'refresh'."

That seems pretty loose. So what's important to 1 organization might not be important to another organization. So it would seem to me that the main requirement of a CMDB is that it's flexible.

It takes a lot of consulting time and subject matter expertise to set up a CMDB. Many CMDB model are so complicated that after the initial set up they are hardly usable and do not provide the promised return on investment.

myCMDB.com offers a basic network inventory management solution with an integrated discovery service, there is no consulting needed, no database licenses or additional hardware expenses.

myCMDB is a hosted turn key solution which helps you to deliver better support to your customers without spending a lot of money.

What about BMC? BMC has a CMDB with logical, physical and relationship information integrating with Event, Incident, Problem, Change, Asset and Configuration Management?

HP OpenView Service Desk is the only production CMDB that supports ITIL Service Delivery and Support Functions. BMC, Troux, Peregrine, CA . . . all of them don't have it and this article is right on. BMC, Peregrine, Troux, CA and etc - all of these companies do not have a data model that supports ITIL processes, only HP does and they have had it for years. BMC, Peregrine, Troux and CA are world-class marketeers and are repositioning their inventory databases as a CMDB which is confirmation that theses companies don't get it.
